Website or App: What Does Your Business Actually Need?
"Should I get a website or an app?" is the wrong first question. The right one is: how do your customers deal with you? Answer that, and the technology picks itself.
A website is for being found
A website is the answer to "I heard about this business, let me check them out." It shows who you are, what you offer, where you are, and how to reach you. If your customers' journey starts with a Google search, a WhatsApp referral or a walk past your shop, this is what you need first. Every business needs this layer; no business is too small for it.
A web app is for running the business
A web application (which opens in any browser and works like an app) is for the part of your business that repeats: taking bookings, tracking orders, managing a customer list, collecting payments. If you currently run these on paper, in a notebook, or across five different chat groups, that's the signal.
A mobile app is for frequent, loyal customers
A native app installed from the app store makes sense when customers interact with you weekly or daily — ordering from the same restaurant, booking the same gym class. If a customer would use you a few times a year, they won't keep your app installed; a good mobile-friendly website serves them better and costs less.
A quick way to decide
- Customers mainly look you up and contact you → website.
- You take payments, bookings or manage customers day to day → web application.
- Customers order or book from you repeatedly → app on top of the website.
- Not sure → start with the website. It's the foundation everything else sits on.
